From Atlanta To Aleppo: CAIR-GA Joins March For Syria

(5/7/2016 – ATLANTA, GA) UPDATE: CAIR Georgia joined an Atlanta demonstration for the people of Syria on Friday, marching from the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to the CNN Center while demanding an end to Russian and Syrian airstrikes on civilians in Aleppo.

“Enough is enough,” said CAIR Georgia Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell, “The Syrian regime is slaughtering innocent men, women and chidren before our very eyes. We must oppose this massacre with our resources and our words before Syria becomes the Rwanda of our generation.”

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/30/16) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today demanded that the Obama administration join with the international community in taking “immediate and concrete steps” to stop the escalating slaughter of the Syrian people by the Assad regime and its allies.

Hundreds have been killed in recent days by indiscriminate bombings of civilian areas, including dozens killed in attacks on medical facilities. United Nations’ human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said the killings demonstrate a “monstrous disregard for civilian lives.”

Experts are now saying that the Obama administration’s support for a recent “cessation of hostilities” brokered by the United States and Russia in February has been used as cover by the Assad regime and pro-regime forces to prepare for this latest offensive targeting civilian areas.

In a statement, CAIR said:

“We condemn the barbaric assaults on Syria’s civilian population and medical facilities by the Assad regime and its allies. We also express the American Muslim community’s solidarity with the Syrian people, who have suffered years of slaughter, torture, rape, and dispossession while the international community offered little more than crocodile tears.

“We demand that our government take immediate and concrete steps to stop this most recent slaughter of Syrian civilians and move beyond words in supporting their just demands for freedom and dignity. The Syrian people need action, not diplomatic mumblings.

“Our nation and the international community must act to end all outside support for the Assad killing machine and provide those Syrians seeking a free and democratic society the means with which to achieve their goal.”

“Finally, we call on the American Muslim community and all other citizens of conscience to pray for the Syrian people.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
