Asalaamu Alaykum & Ramadan Mubarak,
This is Edward Ahmed Mitchell, executive director of the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
As you may know, CAIR Georgia has undergone a reboot in 2016. So have I. Only a few months ago, I left my career as a prosecuting attorney in order to serve, protect and advocate for Georgia Muslims full-time.
Since then, CAIR-GA has gone to work for our community, rebooted and rejuvenated. So far, alhamdulillah, we have:
- Formed relationships with our leaders during a visit to Capitol Hill, where we lobbied Republicans and Democrats to oppose Islamophobia.
- Encouraged our community to become more politically active by hosting the Georgia Muslims Early Vote initiative during the state’s local primaries.
- Hosted free legal workshops, including Last Will & Testament Seminars, to ensure that all Muslims understand their rights and responsibilities.
- Built interfaith relationships with various non-profit groups, including the Georgia NAACP, Project South, and The Carter Center.
- Supported other American Muslim groups, speaking at a fundraiser for Zaytuna College, and raising $20,000 for CAIR-Alabama in Birmingham.
- Delivered a positive image of Islam during media appearances with NPR, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fox 5 Atlanta, 11Alive News, CBS 46 and Channel 2 Action News, among others.
- Opposed terrorism by hosting an anti-extremism seminar that debunked common arguments used by terrorist groups to lure new recruits.
- Joined protests, rallies and vigils in support of social justice causes, including immigration reform, #OurThreeBrothers and the Syrian people.
- Fought anti-Muslim bigotry by investigating cases of discrimination, and successfully rebutted public instances of Islamophobia.
- United Atlanta Muslims across racial and cultural lines, bringing our community together for a memorial celebrating Muhammad Ali.
-
Alhamdulillah. Indeed, we thank and praise God/Allah, for this progress, which has occurred in a short amount of time with limited resources.
Imagine what CAIR Georgia could accomplish with the resources to hire a full-time staff of Georgians dedicated to serving, protecting and advocating for our community, insha Allah.
That’s where you come in!
