CAIR Georgia Attends Swearing-In Ceremony of State Senator Sheikh Rahman, First Muslim Elected To Georgia Legislature

Sheikh Rahman.jpg(ATLANTA, GA – 1/15/2019) The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today attended the swearing-in ceremony of State Senator Sheikh Rahman, the first Muslim and first immigrant elected to the Georgia state legislature. Senator Rahman took his oath of office on the Quran, the Islamic holy book, as he stood alongside his wife and children.

A diverse audience joined the ceremony in the Georgia State Capitol, which featured interfaith prayers from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and Buddhist speakers.

“We congratulate State Senator Rahman for making history as the first Muslim and first immigrant elected to the Georgia state legislature,” said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, executive director of CAIR-Georgia. “We pray that he will harness his experience and values in order serve his constituents and the broader community with honor and integrity.”
