(ATLANTA, GA, 7/6/2026) – The Georgia Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Georgia), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today released condemned anti-Muslim racist remarks by Congressman Rich McCormick (GA – 07).
On June 25, 2026, at a Faith and Freedom Coalition town hall in Washington D.C., McCormick answered a question about abortion by saying:
“Muslims believe that I can force you into Heaven…You have to wear a burka, you’re not going to sin, you’re not going to do anything – I’m going to watch over you. You do something wrong, I’m going to cut off your hand, cut off your head, and all of a sudden I’ve saved you.”
In a statement, CAIR-Georgia Executive Director Azka Mahmood said:
“Rep. McCormick has nearly 15,000 Muslim constituents in Georgia’s 7th Congressional District and apparently, he bizarrely believes they all want to decapitate people. His comments reveal a deep ignorance and bias toward Muslims, which is extremely disappointing, though unfortunately not surprising.
“Rep. McCormick is the elected representative of a congressional district with a high population of Muslims, one of the highest in Georgia. Therefore, we expect a baseline level of respect for his Muslim constituents.
“On behalf of Georgia Muslims, and especially Representative McCormick’s Muslim constituents, we condemn his ignorant and hateful remarks and urge him to make a public apology.”
CAIR has repeatedly condemned anti-Muslim hate rhetoric and actions by public officials.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR’s latest civil rights report documented 8,683 anti-Muslim bias complaints in 2025 – the highest number ever recorded by the organization since it began publishing civil rights reports in 1996.
CAIR-Georgia’s mission is to protect civil rights, promote justice, empower American Muslims, and enhance understanding of Islam.
