(LITHONIA, GA – 1/27/17) The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today met with Congressman Hank Johnson to thank him for his work to protect Georga’s Muslim community, and warn him of the Trump Administration’s plans to target American Muslims.
“Rep. Hank Johnson has stood on the front lines of the struggle to defend all Georgians, including Muslims, from bigotry and discrimination,” said Edward Ahmed Mitchell, executive director of CAIR Georgia. “We thank the congressman for his efforts, and we hope to work with him to protect Georgia Muslims from the Trump Administration’s anti-Muslim policies.”
During the meeting, CAIR Georgia–which met with Rep. Johnson shortly before President Trump signed an executive order banning all refugees as well as immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations–also alerted Rep. Johnson to the potential for unjust treatment of travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Rep. Johnson later visited the airport alongside Congressman John Lewis in an effort to free travelered detained by Customs & Border Patrol in the wake of the “Muslim Ban” executive order.
