(ATLANTA, GA, 6/7/16) – The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-GA) today invited Dr. Gerald Harris, the editor of the official newspaper of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, to fellowship with his Georgia Muslim neighbors during a Ramadan interfaith dinner at the Islamic Community Center of Atlanta.
Dr. Harris recently published an article in the Christian Index in which he argues that constitutionally-protected freedom of religion should be denied to American Muslims, presumably including the 5,000 American Muslims who serve in the armed forces as well as cultural icons like the late athlete and humanitarian Muhammad Ali.

“We welcome Dr. Harris to break bread with his Georgia Muslim neighbors so that he can recognize the common values that unite all people of faith,” said CAIR Georgia Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “Americans need not share the same religious beliefs as our neighbors in order to respect their constitutional right to worship God as they see fit.”
Mitchell noted that if the unconstitutional denial of religious freedom was implemented, it would impact thousands of American Muslims who currently serve in the U.S. armed forces, as well as cultural icons like the late athlete and humanitarian Muhammad Ali.
CAIR-GA also welcomed other Georgians interested in meeting their American Muslim neighbors to RSVP for the Islamic Community Center of Atlanta’s June 18th Ramadan Interfaith Dinner by emailing [email protected]. Space is limited.
CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
