(ATLANTA, GA – 4/2018) The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today celebrated the defeat of SB 452 and other anti-immigrant legislation during Georgia’s legislative session.
The legislation would have placed both documented and undocumented immigrants in Georgia at risk of indefinite detention and deportation for even minor infractions.
CAIR Georgia staff attorney and lobbyist Murtaza Khwaja worked with immigrant rights groups, Latino advocacy organizations, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the ACLU of Georgia, and other civil rights groups to lobby against SB 452 and other legislation. This also marks also the second year in a row in which no legislator submitted an Islamophobic “anti-Sharia” bill at the State Capitol.
