(ATLANTA, GA, 11/09/2022): Today, the Georgia Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations congratulated four Muslim candidates who won their races in the 2022 midterm elections on November 8, 2022. Two Muslim women won historic races in the state of Georgia in the 2022 midterm elections.
Nabilah Islam won in State Senate District 7, making her the first ever Muslim woman elected to the Georgia State Senate.
Ruwa Romman won her election for Georgia House District 97. She is the first Muslim woman ever elected to the Georgia State House and first Palestinian-American elected to any Georgia public office.
Farooq Mughal was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives from District 105.
The three newly elected American Muslims will join Senator Rahman, who was the first Muslim to be elected to the Georgia Legislature in 2018.
CAIR-Georgia Executive Director Murtaza Khwaja said in a statement,
“Once again, the Georgia Muslim community have made their voices heard. They were part of record early voting turnout in the face of suppressive legislation like SB 202 to bring about the historic election of the first Muslim women to the Georgia state House and Senate.”
“In addition to the two Muslim women, Georgia Muslims also elected the first Muslim man to the state House and ensured that our next state legislature looks more like us,” Khwaja added.
In 2022, an unprecedented number of 7 Muslim candidates ran for office on both Democratic and Republican platforms, reflecting an increase in the civic and political engagement of the state’s Muslim voters.
Congratulations to Senator Rahman, Senator-elect Islam, Representative-elect Romman, and Representative-elect Mughal for their victories and for inspiring future Muslim candidates to serve their state and communities.
CAIR-Georgia’s mission is to protect civil rights, promote justice, empower American Muslims, and enhance the understanding of Islam.
