(ATLANTA, GA – 11/7/2018) The Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today congratulated two Georgia Muslims for making history during the midterm election on Nov. 6, 2018.
Incoming state senator Sheikh Rahman became the first immigrant and first Muslim elected to the Georgia state legislature, while activist and community leader Aisha Yaqoob launched an unsuccessful but historic campaign for the state house.
In a statement, CAIR-Georgia executive director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Congratulations to incoming state senator Sheikh, who officially became the first immigrant and first Muslim elected to the Georgia legislature.
“We also congratulate our friend, Aisha Yaqoob, a community leader who ran an inspiring and historic race for the Georgia state House.
“Although she did not win this election, we hope and expect her to make more history soon, God willing. May God grant both Mr. Rahman and Ms. Yaqoob success as advocates for justice.”
