About CAIR-Georgia

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. CAIR-Georgia works to protect civil liberties, promote justice, enhance understanding of Islam, and empower American Muslims across the state.

The Opportunity

CAIR-Georgia seeks a Legal Assistant to handle community inquiries and coordinate outreach. This role combines client support and public engagement, providing compassionate help for those facing discrimination and fostering relationships within Georgia’s diverse Muslim community.

This role focuses on client intake and case support during busy periods, such as the K-12 academic year. During slower times, such as summer and breaks, the Legal Assistant would focus on community outreach, coordinating volunteers, and working on organizational projects.

Responsibilities

1. Client Services (~60% peak | ~40% slower)

  • Case Support: Maintain accurate, confidential intake records; draft routine correspondence under attorney supervision; coordinate translation services and provide cultural context when needed.
  • Client Communication: Serve as the primary contact for inquiries, status updates, and meeting scheduling, offering professional, culturally sensitive support throughout the process.

2. Community Outreach & Engagement (integrated year-round)

  • Program Coordination: Assist in the planning and execution of departmental workshops, know-your-rights presentations, and educational events.
  • Community Insight: Gather feedback through surveys, help identify emerging needs, and raise awareness of CAIR-Georgia’s services.

3. Administrative & Operational Support (~20% peak | ~40% slower)

  • Office Support: Manage attorney calendars, schedule proceedings, and assist with technology troubleshooting (excluding case management software).
  • Records Management: Organize and maintain client files (physical and electronic), handle scanning and data entry, and ensure compliance with retention policies.
  • General Support: Assist with special projects, volunteer coordination, and organizational initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree preferred);
  • At least 2 years’ experience as a legal assistant, preferably in civil rights, employment law, or non-profit work;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail;
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity when working with diverse communities;
  • Commitment to civil rights and social justice;
  • Discretion in handling confidential information;

Preferred

  • Experience with Muslim-American communities or other marginalized populations;
  • Bilingual in Arabic, Urdu, Dari, or Pashto (strongly preferred);
  • Familiarity with civil rights laws and Georgia legal procedures;
  • Public speaking experience.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Schedule: Some evenings/weekends for community events; seasonal variation in focus between client services and outreach.
  • Travel: Occasional travel within Georgia for meetings and events.
  • Nature of Work: Fast-paced, at times can be emotionally demanding; requires resilience and empathy when supporting victims of discrimination.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $20/hour
  • Professional development opportunities
