CAIR-Georgia is the Georgia chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest civil liberties and advocacy group serving the Muslim community. Our mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil liberties, and empower Muslims in America to advocate for themselves. From restrictions placed on Muslims to practice their religion, to profiling and discrimination stemming from a lack of understanding of Islam, the need for CAIR in Georgia is great. CAIR-Georgia strives to ensure that Muslims in Georgia enjoy the same protections that all Americans have.
The Opportunity
CAIR-Georgia is looking for a passionate and dedicated Legislative Aide. This person will assist the Policy Director throughout Georgia’s legislative session, watching committee meetings, researching and drafting materials related to current legislation, and more.
Responsibilities
- Watch and take notes on committee hearings in Georgia’s General Assembly
- Research emergent legislative threats
- Draft legislator and community-facing advocacy materials
- Draft materials designed to educate the community on current legislation
- Support community members in their engagement with legislative session
- Set up meetings with members of Congress for National Muslim Hill Day
- Speak to legislators about current pieces of legislation
- Attend coalition meetings
Required Qualifications
- Strong writing ability
- Ability to read and analyze legislation
- Ability to build relationships with elected officials
- Public speaking skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team
- Capacity to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment
- Receptive to feedback
- Strong communication skills
- Prior experience with the Georgia legislature or policy work more broadly
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with issues impacting Georgia’s Muslim community
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in law or public policy preferred
- Prior experience with Georgia state policy work preferred
- Understanding of Georgia’s legislative process
- Ability to develop talking points related to legislation
Compensation and Benefits
- $18/hour
